Herc--re. "does Globalstar's equipment have any broadband capabilities?", not unless they redefine broadband. It will inaugurate data capabilities via the phone later in 2000 but that would be at 9.6Kbps, still about 4 times the as-yet-to-be-shown data rate of Iridium.

I have a Globalstar phone and have used Iridium. I like the Globalstar design (better antenna configuration, a bit lighter) and its voice quality seems better than Iridium. Not much lag either.

The measured pace of service rollout is probably a good idea, beginning in North America in February (planned). One thing I'm not too keen on is having to buy a separate phone to use in the GSM areas. And the cost of a Globalstar phone is somewhat higher than the Motorola version of the Iridium phone. Still, it is a nifty system and should do well.
