Trade date is what counts, not settlement. Period. If you have your quotes on at 12:45 on Friday (past years it was 3:45) you can get some real bargains in lightly traded retail owned stocks, as people painfully sell at what they know is the bottom). I usually have a long shopping list, and am out of most of it within 3-4 days. The fallen angels, OTOH, usually pop before the last day as everyone is afraid to miss the boat. This year I'm considering short selling some of the ones that are going to get marked up at the close. (but not the tulips stocks).
