As far as I am concerned Wired is a must-read for tech investors. Get many good ideas from it. Also, speaking of MEMS here is a good site:

Lucius: Isn't it amazing what technology is coming to and CREE is in the middle of so many new initiatives. If SiC could be used for the MEMS as you suggest, I would bet the management at CREE are on top of it.

MEM technology has had a huge impact on infrared imaging technology. Look for references to microbolometer imaging arrays or devices.

However, MEM technology is inherently silicon based due to the magic relationships between the silicon/SiO2 physics and chemistry.

I can't see any advantage in MEMs for SiC and a number of technological showstoppers.

Cree should focus on AlGaN/SiC optoelectronic devices and to a lesser extent power switching devices. That is where the payoff is.

SiC is probably not better for MEMS unless it is a high temp extra rugged application. The stiffness would dictate higher forces which probably infers more power drain. The actual deflections for SiC maybe more limited than for PolySi regardless of the power applied.

I'm not stating these as fact but rather supposition based on fundamental properties of the materials.
