If you're running 95 or 98 I would recommend installing Dial Up Networking 1.3. It is a patch you can get from the MSFT web site. Both of my brothers were having trouble with lock ups while being connected and this seemed to help.

Russ,
I get screen freezes on WIN 98, and I don't get them on WIN 95. Of course, the WIN 95 has many updates and runs on an old 133Mz chip. It is a tower and has scanner, head set, printer, speakers, and assorted garbage hooked into it. I don't want to update it. It runs great after being hit by lightening three times. <G>

The WIN 98 is on a notebook. It freezes up on some of my chess games. I've learned to quit after about four or or five games and take a reboot break. I think that clears the game memory and prevents the freeze up.

I also use WinDelete. Any programs down loaded from the net are tracked and delete information is saved in a log. The programs are like cookies. They enable a site to play java programs. I have had some freezes I thought those programs caused. WinDelete enabled me to delete the small programs. The freeze went away after deleting them. I think the last one was IE4 something. The programs often have to do with the Internet Explorer program. IE27 also gave me a problem.

I'm not a tech person, just a long time stupid user who has learned a few tricks. The freezes shouldn't be a big deal, but the 40 second delays might be unless you are down loading a page with a lot of graphics for the first time. Those pages take a long time until they are stored in you PC memory cache. Hmmm, the SI server has also been slow lately.<G>

Good Luck and Happy New Year,
NW

Russ -
You mention that you are using a 56K modem. As you know, the standards for 56K have been evolving and it was only recently that the 2 competing standards converged. As a result, not all sites are fully compatible, especially ISPs who may have had a number of older 56K modems on line.

These modems automatically "retrain" to achieve the highest connection speed. You may be seeing the effects of the modem attempting to get a faster connection and "fighting" with the modem on the other end. Updating the software you are using to connect could help.
