THey bring them in frozen, too. We became experts on this before the first SI gathering. Bob Mackey and I went on an adventure in search of durian to present triumphantly at the picnic the next day. First we went to a REAL (oh dear- I'm going to screw this up, having no memory for facts) Vietnamese? Korean? restaurant. I ordered soup- and there was a giant leg floating in it, and big green things, but it was exceptionally good. Anyway, he asked the owner where we could find durian, and the owner told us there was a shipment in at some market, but to hurry, so we rushed over there. SUre enough, the market was packed and people were grabbing the durian right and left. It's obviously quite the delicacy. There was a huge box of them and we managed to snare two. My memory is that they were about 7.oo each. or maybe 7.00 for both, but we took them back to his house and hung them outside on the patio to thaw. The next morning, H. the Lurker picked us up, and we put the durian in the trunk. They really didn't smell that bad, and we poohpoohed all the wienies who had said how gross durian is. However, on the drive over the mountain, this weird odor began to seep under the back seat and into the car. It's not a BAD odor, it's just--a very strange, permeating, cloying odor. The rental car place must have wondered the next day what happened in that trunk. We were very relieved to get to the beach. There are pictures somewhere of us eating that durian. Well, Holly ate a lot of it, which made us question her stability, and LLR, MIke S and I tried it, and X says she did, but I still say she SPIT HERS OUT. The rest I think is still on that beach. I draw the line at placenta as an apres naissance snack (that's such a terrible pun in English I can't even type it). I wanted a Quarter POunder with Cheese and a big chocolate chip cookie from Reunion Station. A couple of years ago at Feelies- wow- it might be three- TC told us about some very strange foods he has eaten on his trips to the Far East. LIke eyeballs and stuff. Speaking of Holly, I have heard from her, and she promises she is coming soon for a visit...
