I didn't do anything weird to get it single-spaced.

To get this:

    a
     b
      c


I typed this:

&ltpre&gt    a
     b
      c&lt/pre&gt


Perhaps you were putting the 
&ltpre&gt-&lt/pre&gt
sequence around each line of text?

(And the next question is, "How did you get &ltpre&gt to appear in your post without its turning into an HTML tag?")
