If the cost to Globalstar is 5 cents per minute of usage (as intimated by G Gilder) then the profitablility at 45 cents wholesale is very good. As to lack of market like Iridium think about this -- GTE Vodafon AirTouch ( NextWave?) might never need to build another expensive cellular tower - just use the big tower in the sky. That way they could omit all roaming agreements and their convoluted billing/record keeping. Think of the savings to the carriers! Nationwide buildout overnight.......
And for those who complain that $1.50 per minute of usage retail to end customer is high - look at the roaming bills you pay on your cellular phone now. Looks cheap to me.
