Rhythms NetConnections Announces 1999 Operating Statistics; Finishes Year With Record DSL Lines and Central Office Deployment ENGLEWOOD, Colo., Jan. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Rhythms NetConnections Inc. (Nasdaq: RTHM - news), a North American provider of digital subscriber line (DSL)-based, high-speed Internet access and networking solutions, today released certain operating results for the year ended December 31, 1999. Rhythms exceeded its objective for DSL lines in service, reporting 12,500 installed DSL lines as of December 31, 1999. This represents an increase of more than 86 percent from its installed base of 6,700 DSL lines as of September 30,1999. Rhythms also exceeded its central office deployment targets and as of December 31, 1999, had 1,225 central office locations built or operational. This represents an increase of 370 central offices or 43 percent over the 855 built or operational central offices at the end of the 1999 third quarter and a 513 percent increase over the 200 central offices built or operational on December 31, 1998. Since Rhythms began its network build in September 1997, the company has built 1,225 central offices in just over two years. Rhythms believes the pace of its network build represents the fastest deployment of any data competitive local exchange carrier (CLEC) in history. As of December 31, 1999, Rhythms offered services in 38 metropolitan areas representing 67 metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs), up 41 percent from the 27 metropolitan areas representing 47 MSAs served in the 1999 third quarter. ``We are extremely pleased to have exceeded our fourth quarter objectives for lines in service and central office deployment, as well as achieving our 1999 national coverage goals well ahead of schedule,' said Steve Stringer, President and Chief Operating Officer of Rhythms. ``We look forward to the new year as DSL-based services continue to gain greater acceptance and recognition as a powerful new local access solution.' In November 1999, Rhythms announced plans to increase its previously announced national coverage for the year 2000 by an additional 20 markets, bringing its expected total metropolitan area coverage to 70 markets, representing more than 100 MSAs, by the end of 2000. This is expected to bring its total central office locations across the United States to 2,000 by the end of 2000. ``In just over three years, Rhythms will have substantially completed its national build. This has been and continues to be an extremely aggressive deployment and one that few communication providers can claim to have achieved,' said Stringer. ``With an expected 2,000 central office locations across the United States, we estimate our coverage will span more than 50 percent of businesses and 45 percent of homes in the U.S. When you combine our pan-Canadian deployment with our U.S. coverage, we believe no other broadband access provider will have Rhythms' North American reach.'
