Woman Charged With Harassing Dolphins

Updated 8:17 AM ET December 30, 1999
JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - A South African jet-skier has been charged in the Indian Ocean city of Port Elizabeth with harassing dolphins, the South African Press Association (SAPA) reported on Thursday.
SAPA said the 38-year-old woman was arrested on Wednesday after a police helicopter spotted her allegedly riding her jet-ski through a school of dolphins. She was released on 1000 rand ($163) bail.

The news agency said the case is believed to be the first of its kind in South Africa.

There are many charter operators in South Africa and neighboring Mozambique that offer dolphin watching trips with the opportunity to swim or snorkel with the sea mammals.
