FCC Grants License to Globalstar USA For Distribution of Satellite Phone Service Quick Approval Allows Company to Make Service Commercially Available to U.S. Customers SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 29, 1999--Globalstar USA, the exclusive provider of Globalstar's satellite-based communications services in the United States, today announced the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has authorized the company to sell satellite phone services to customers in the United States. The Special Temporary Authorization was granted for 180 days while the FCC's review of the company's license application is pending. The authorization granted by the FCC is subject to an agreement reached between the company and three federal agencies, the Department of Defense, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the Department of Justice, regarding U.S. wiretap processes through Globalstar's Canadian gateways. ``All of our efforts, communications technology breakthroughs, satellite launches, establishment of worldwide partnerships and vast hours of work have been given official recognition and approval,' said Andy Radlow, Director of Marketing for Globalstar USA. ``The quick response of the FCC puts our goal of establishing an affordable global communications service one step closer to being achieved.' Globalstar USA plans to launch full commercial service in early 2000, and will begin offering service on a limited basis in January. Globalstar Satellite Phone Service No longer restricted to high-end use by cost or form, satellite phones are now more affordable and practical for a wider user base. The Globalstar system is a state-of-the-art mobile satellite service that extends the coverage of today's analog and digital wireless services and allows phone calls to be made and received virtually anywhere in the world. The system will offer data capabilities, allowing for e-mail and short messaging later in the year 2000. ----------------------------------------------------- PS - Maurice, better buy now :-)
