Are you sure re their competitors? I assumed bookstores do the same thing as grocers- charge $$ from the suppliers for best placement on their store shelves- ya know - eye level and all that!

And the baseline would be sales on consignment from the publishers, even for brick stores. Book publishing has become incredibly competitive. But i am not in the bus, so I don't know for sure.
