Hi Everyone, and WELCOME Paul! Joanie and BLUE, your posts earlier today made me think about them all the time we were gone to our Pac NW NorthCountry for a ride.... Don't want to be too serious at the end of this year, and yet, I think it is a serious thing to think about....SO THANKS for making me do that...and levy, really appreciated your posts today too...

Some of my thoughts....and below them, a couple of links that I looked for and found this AM....the PI editorial is one of the best I've seen, and bless Metacrawler.....here it is below....will be interested in all thoughts....And you will see the PI Editorial Board article is an opposite opinion...when one sees the voting record for Seattle, and much of western WA, one will see why some of these thoughts are in the editorial....and it might explain some of the actions/non actions during WTO)

Somehow things do seemed to have been turned upside down?..

Somehow, WTO related anarchists, thugs and lawbreakers were allowed to stay on streets.and.....Somehow our Mayor has CANCELLED the Space Needle Celebration..

Police Chief Stamper has assumed ALL the blame for the entire fiasco. (in editorial column in ST this week...)

If this is/was true, is he the boss of Seattle? Where was Mayor Schell?

Mr. Clinton invited the WTO to Seattle in his Jan 1999 speech. Assuming the White House Secret Service, the FBI, the Gov. of WA, the Mayor of Seattle, and ALL the WTO organizers were on the ball, and thought out ALL the possibilities of any potential problems, then WHY did the mess happen? Even when we found a few days later the FBI had warned the State and City of "serious potential problems" at least TWO weeks before the WTO meetings.

Re the cancellation of the Millennium celebration at the Space Needle....I have to wonder just WHO is in charge of the city of Seattle, and any other city where this could happen?..This seems to penalize the law abiding citizens (and taxpayers I might add) of their right to make the choice or attending or not...

IMO...The only reason the event should have been cancelled is:
IF THE FBI and/or other government services have found additional information about possible terrorist activities..and to date, the citizens haven't/or can't be notified for obvious reasons...

It will be very interesting to see what happens everywhere this year.

Remember ...WE GET WHOM and WHAT WE VOTE FOR..maybe this is a good reminder for all of us to talk to others about... I personally don't think Seattle is the only city in the USA where either total naivet‚ or total incompetence reigns.

909's x 2000 and then some more! And HAPPY BIRTHDAY, TECHRIDE!

It is possible to both speak softly and carry a big stick. Yet that lesson escaped Seattle's Mayor Paul Schell as he prepared for last week's World Trade Organization meeting here.
(KLP note: there is lots more to this well thought out article..)

Calling off party the prudent step
Wednesday, December 29, 1999
SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER EDITORIAL BOARD
No celebration could be worth the price if New Year's Eve and the first hours of 2000 saw the worst-case scenario unfold at Seattle Center.
Of course it would have been a spectacularly memorable party at the city facility if everything had gone as planned. But this year, the chances of no trouble at that huge gathering are just not good enough.
