I staked my reputation on this stock in 1996 when it was trading at $10 a share. Then I saw it drop to below $7 over the months to come. I was dumb founded! What was I doing wrong! I was certain this was the company with the wireless CDMA technology of the future, or so I thought! I mean after doing my DD on this company back then, I was certain that its CDMA on steroids technology was a killer app over and above that of QCOM's. What was with the rest of the world! I sold it at a loss and haven't looked at it since until now! I tell this story just to relate to everyone that you can be right about a company and its future and still end up on the losing side. Back then I came to the conclusion that this company was more like Aware is in the DSL world. Sure they own the key patents but that's all. They don't know how to do anything with them except license them to companies that actually design and market equipment for sale in the real world. Companies like that never really seem to hold high valuations over the long haul, maybe because patents are time sensitive and companies that know how to both come up with the patents they need to design commercial products that produce revenue, and license the ones they don't, have the real potential to capture a market place i.e the QCOM's, Redbacks, and Covads of the world. BTW I did have the foresight to both preach the merits of Qualcomm and purchase it for the real winner that it is and now it's the best performer in my portfolio by far!!!! Good luck everyone and happy new millennium in 12 months that is! :)
