Re: Some AT&T Stats about Cable Upgrades

Bernard and Thread,
I pulled this off the HLIT thread(another 50% T vendor). I don't know where it came from, but appears to back up what I've been reading/hearing in other places. I'm going to post the stats over on the last mile thread, for future reference, because most of the message is AT&T is executing on their version of last mile solutions.

AT&T Chairman Likes Company's Cable Position

The evidence of the company's success is that it's installing 3,000 digital television hookups per day.
Despite the looming threat of forced open access, grumbling from other operators, and the inability to finalize a telephone deal with Time Warner Cable, chairman Michael Armstrong is happy with AT&T's foray into the cable industry.

"The real story is that today AT&T is executing," Armstrong said during an hour-long meeting this week with reporters at the Western Cable trade show in Los Angeles.

The evidence of the company's success is that it's installing 3,000 digital television hookups per day and will end the year with slightly less than two million digital subscribers, according to Armstrong. Further, he said, the company could end next year with 400,000 to 500,000 telephone subscribers, three million digital television subscribers, and 700,000 high-speed data customers. Those numbers, he said, prove that the concept of generating multiple revenue streams over a hybrid fiber/coax platform is solid.

"What we were predicting when we made these investments in the cable companies is now a reality," he said....

"And is putting ANTC squarely in front of the broadband train"

I don't question their strategic direction. I do question why the management of this company is missteping around earnings at the very time they should be greatly excelling. These are the best of times in the cable industry, a far cry from the lean times a couple of years ago. IMHO, this earnings fiasco during the best of times is the direct result of poor management. Management is more than just one person and as a group they aren't cutting it. With the exception of the Arris JV telephony products, ANTC sells many low tech products. How do I know this? All I have to do is look at product margins.

The stock is going to be manipulatively bounced all around so perhaps the worst is behind ANTC holders on the price action. I believe that when the Nasdaq 100 corrects soon (it is overdue), ANTC will be a $21 stock. This my guesstimate since the 'ol crystal ball broke many months ago. Good trading to you.
