I'm just curious. Have you tried the free ISPs? It is my understanding that if you have AOL installed, AOL prevents you from using NetZero.net.

I'm not sure if that's correct Peter. I currently have AltaVista and NetZero on my machine as backup. I use AOL 4.0 so this may be a 5.0 limitation.

Well...I just went to NetZero web site and looked around.
It asked me if I wanted to join and download the software.
I didn't do it...since I don't want it. But looks like I certainly have that option if I so desire!!

AOL is not some "Big Brother" ISP that has the power to trap you in a maze of AOLness to never be found again. It is just a portal...to the entire Internet World of funky surfing and time-lapseness like any other ISP.

It just happens to have a lot more groovy stuff at its own portal site to entice you to stick around and explore...that's all. You are free to leave the "compound" whenever you wish!! And all at the click of a button. Imagine that!

Why do I have AOL?? I have had the same email address for 8 years plus. My daughter is on AOL KIDS constantly...which keeps the creeps and weirdos away!! And many of my friends, neighbors, relatives have AOL...which provides some fairly nifty shortcuts to communication when you are all on AOL. AND...I can travel anywhere and access AOL to retrieve my mail...and look at my real time stock portfolio. I couldn't do that with lets say, Aloha.net or Lava.net

Hope that helps,
Mary
