Sycamore, Juniper, Corvis, CIEN, NT, LU, Pirelli, they all abide by SONET interfacing standards up to OC-192, with many of them now seriously flirting with OC-768, and some already talking beyond. I don't see it going away anytime soon.
Perhaps there will be a greater uptake in GbE-over-lambda for ISP peering purposes and by some enterprises at some point, but that remains to be seen.

Thank you Frank for that statement. Sometimes, I struggle with everything you write because I am just a layman but I do understand your point. It is helpful.

Regards, Ken

Thanks for the interesting thoughts.

>>It's the "containerization quality" of the SONET standard which has clung to the
industry, and used so extensively, because of its pervasiveness in add-drop muxes and
cross-connects which are still absolutely essential elements in reaching the vast majority
of end users (who do not have dark fiver installed).<<

Do I understand that correctly by asking if this Sonet legacy containerization can be done away with once the end user is connected directly by fiber? (Doing away with the need for add-drop muxes?) Or is this containerization not only a function of the physical equipment being used, but also of the non-physical (such as software, etc?)
