Signs of bullish enthusiasm run throughout the
technology sector. Qualcomm, a small Californian
company with a big stake in a leading mobile
communications technology, yesterday cemented its
place in the record books as its stock market value
topped $100bn - 25 times its level at the start of the
year.

The astonishing rise has made Qualcomm the fastest
company ever to make the transition from promising
upstart to $100bn giant. "It's unheard of for a company
which is not a penny stock to go up 25 times," said
Larry Grafstein, of Gramercy Communications Partners,
a US telecoms investment firm.

Even Microsoft, worth more than $600bn, took over six
years for its market capitalisation to grow from $4bn to
$100bn. The world's largest software producer has been
among the strongest gainers in recent weeks, rising
more than 28 per cent soon after it became one of the
first Nasdaq-listed stocks to be included in the Dow
Jones Industrial Average. Investors remain unfazed
despite the threat of the US regulators' antitrust case
that still hangs over the company.
