The command post will be the nexus for calling out law enforcement to handle major crimes, computer hacking or terrorist strikes as 1999 rolls into 2000. "We won't be responding to benign computer glitches or power outages," said Greg Rampton, an FBI agent who also oversees the Denver Joint Terrorism Task Force. "We're here to take information, evaluate it and send out the people we need." About 10 other law-enforcement agencies, ranging from the Secret Service to the Denver Police Department, are represented in the task force. Other police agencies also could be mobilized from the command post, a two-room office with maps, computers and telephones on the 18th floor of the Bryon G. Rogers Federal Building in downtown Denver. The mission of the terrorism task force dovetails with the FBI's concern about possible threats over the New Year's weekend. The Denver command post is scheduled to operate through at least 5 p.m. Monday. This weekend is the first time the FBI has established command posts at its 56 regional offices nationwide in anticipation of possible disruption, Rampton said. "We have not received any information that Denver and Colorado are targets of any domestic or internal terrorism," Rampton said. "I don't think people need to be overly concerned or panicked. We're taking every precaution to be sure it's a safe and enjoyable holiday weekend for everyone." Because Denver is the western headquarters for federal agencies such as the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the General Services Administration, their regional command posts also will be staffed over the weekend. "I really don't want to get into numbers of people, but let's just say we're increasing everyone's awareness and making sure all vehicles are checked," said Ben Gonzales, spokesman for the GSA. The agency operates 550 federal building in six Western states from offices at the Denver Federal Center in Lakewood. The center will close six of its seven gates from about 6 p.m. today until about 6 a.m. Monday, Gonzales said. Denver's U.S. Mint has extra security in place, but Jim Broz, acting chief of security, won't say what it is. "We have armed guards here in any case," Broz said.
