RE>>The word " hated " ( MISEO ) is translated several ways, the one I feel is correct in this scripture passage is " having a relative preference for one thing over another<<

Malachi 1:3 And I hated Esau, and laid his mountains and his heritage waste for the dragons of the wilderness

This is where Paul quoted from. In Hebrew it is the word "Sane". It appears 146 times in the Old Testament and was translated "hate" 136 of those times and "enemy, enemies and foe" 6 times. . It is real hate.

I used that argument however myself at one time. :-}

It is plain that the Blessing that Jacob received was Spiritual and Esau was only Physical.

Most people quote this verse to try and use the " relativity argument"

Luke 14:26 If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.

This verse and teaching however is made more plain in this account:

Matthew 10:36 And a man's foes shall be they of his own household.
37 He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.

One can only hope for Godly parents but not many of us are Blessed in that way these days. Jesus is teaching that many would find their family ties an enemy of serving God and that we need to let go of family if they become the enemy of our walk in God. Indeed we need to let the cares of this life go.

Matthew 10:39 He that findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it.

We are not to be as Esau and let go of our spiritual heritage to feed our flesh as did evil Esau.

Hebrews 12:16 Lest there be any fornicator, or profane person, as Esau, who for one morsel of meat sold his birthright.

Esau went to Hell. He was rejected by God before even being born. He was "passed over" as was all of Egypt save a few midwives.

Moses had to hate those whom he had learned to love and call "brother" as a child as the very enemies of God.

Luke 8:20 And it was told him by certain which said, Thy mother and thy brethren stand without, desiring to see thee.
21 And he answered and said unto them, My mother and my brethren are these which hear the word of God, and do it.

Our true family must be the Family of Faith and not that of the flesh.

So you can rightly show that Jesus calls us to hate even our own family with a righteous hatred and not to give into the affections of the flesh. We must serve Jesus even if it costs us our family of the flesh or even our own lives.

When Jesus calls us to hate our own lives he means the one in the flesh. Not life itself.

Jude 1:23 And others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire; hating even the garment spotted by the flesh.

We are to hate sin... is that relative to how much we love righteousness? No.

God did truly hate Esau and predestined him to be a vessel of wrath.

Psalms 5:5 The foolish shall not stand in thy sight: thou hatest all workers of iniquity.

===== That is not relative to anything - They go to hell. =====

Luke 13:27 But he shall say, I tell you, I know you not whence ye are; depart from me, all ye workers of iniquity.
