Gary,It's an IP network with an ATM backbone... probably using MPLS. Still, it's a
pretty small network.

may this this will refresh you memory.

again we are talking about technology not specific company.
without ATM backbone, non of this so call IP network will have any QoS required by large customers.
BTW,right now you can placed IP/MPLS and ATM protocols on the same routing switch platform.
Everything is converging to the common platform.
And please, do not talk about ATM cell tax. This is what you get for QoS.
It is easy to talk about simplicity of pure IP, when QoS does not exist. Add QoS and you challenge complexity of ATM.
Why British Telecommunication PLC and SBC Comm., not mentioning 6 billions pronto project are basing they nets on ATM infrastructure (for example CC of Pronto project).
To much movement among big carriers to ignore it.
Optics, well in addition to interstate highways you need intrastate highway, local road to talk about road network.Optics are just interstate highways, which need ATM anyway(0C-48,C-192 etc.) to manage network and make business profitable, by providing differentiated serviced with QoS or not depending on customers needs.
