Jon,
if you're wanting to short QQQ (or anything else) and your broker can't borrow it for you (or even if they can), do a synthetic short (short call, long put).
there's no significant difference and actually is a positive in that you can skew the strikes to your advantage and also not need as large a margin as a short.
regards
