It wasn't too long ago the working-man's bars around here had 35¢ glasses of beer, dollar shots.

The Odd Couple II would have played out well in one of those places; a Martini was more likely to be an ironworker at a local shop than a drink.

One time, the bartender was exceptionally busy (pouring shots and beer, of course) and there a new guy two stools over. A huge biker with his helmet on the bar. Someone came in and sat between us, he told Kevin he wanted a Melon Ball.

Kevin did not even blink; he turned around, grabbed some bottles flipped back took a bunch of ice and threw it in the helmet and made a drink. The biker was practically on the floor; became a regular after that.

Another time a guy walked in, again while he was busy, told him he wanted a Budweiser. He was standing next to the door, a place where people often get takeout. Kevin poured a glass of beer and turned to move to the next guy.

The newcomer shouted out "Hey, I wanted that to go!".

Again Kev did not miss a beat; he spun around, grabbed a small bag. Poured the glass of beer in it and handed it to the guy.

I miss times like that; I guess in my heart I'll always be a stableboy.
