GEMSTAR ADDED TO NASDAQ 100, ENTERING THE MAINSTREAM
Late last week, Gemstar was added to the Nasdaq 100, replacing Qwest Communications and continuing to raise Gemstar's visibility as it begins to enter the mainstream. We note a recent full-page ad in the Wall Street Journal from RCA, highlighting Gemstar's Guide Plus Gold as the hot reason to buy an RCA television. Such free marketing for Gemstar highlights our expectation that this interactive-television powerhouse will prove to have one of the most profitable business models ever, collecting rapidly growing licensing and advertising fees at virtually zero incremental cost of sales, the result of successfully defending its intellectual property against all challengers. We also want to own it as user time continues to shift from the TV to the Web.
