You are too correct. My parents fall into the group of people with a net worth of around zero; it would be severely negative except for a bankruptcy a few years ago. And they are lucky to be homeowners!

When you factor in the 1 million persons who will go bankrupt in the next 12 months due to their high negative net worth to the groups you already mentioned, it's easy to see how the bottom 40% can average just 1 grand of net worth. Maybe a lot of people haven't noticed how most people have had their standard of living decline in the last 20 years even though the top 10% and especially the top 1% have had their standard of living skyrocket.
