Thursday December 30 03:30 PM ESTPresario users report freezes John G. Spooner, ZDNet Frozen Presario 5800 series PCs are leaving a number of Compaq Computer Corp. customers frustrated. At least 20 Compaq (NYSE: CPQ - news) customers who purchased the Presario 5800 PCs recently have reported inexplicable freezing of their PCs while surfing the Web or playing games. The freeze forces users to shut down and reboot, sometimes by pressing the machine's power button or unplugging it. "It's a known problem and we've been proactive in addressing it," said Compaq spokeswoman Hedy Baker. Many users reported their problems on Compaq's Web-based Presario support forum. The models that seemed most affected are Presario 5834, 5837, 5838, 5852 and 5868 with Advanced Micro Devices Inc. K6-2 or Athlon processors. Many users, however, reported the same problems with Intel Pentium III or Celeron systems, such as the Presario 5835. System resources an issue The root of the problem, according to Compaq Tech support personnel who posted to the Forum, appears to be in Windows operating system settings and how the PC's system resources are utilized. "I have a Presario 5837 that is one week old and, like everyone else, my computer started locking up right out of the box. I'm very dismayed," said one customer who posted to the forum on Dec. 18. Compaq technicians posting on the forum said the problems are related to the amount of system resources being used at one time. A high number of programs running in the background puts an abnormal strain on the user's PC, the company said. "The system resources are like the water in your home. If you have two or more showers running and then you turn on a pipe, you will see a reduction in the water pressure. When you shut some items off, your resources are back to normal. It's the same with your computer, and by taking some of the items out and only leaving the ones that are needed you get better performance from your computer," posted one Compaq tech
