brian, the Puritans are the only ones that chose to glorify themselves by using that word. Recorded history shows that one of the basic concepts of the Calvanistic, Puritan sect, is that only those that believe as they do are fit to be Christians. If that is not egomaniacal, what do you call it?

The Elect is a purely Biblical concept there are very few who enjoy it !

Re. the fact that there are very few that could be considered "elect", I wonder why you think there are so very few? Stated another way, why do you think God created so many billions of people with no hope of salvation?
