Burning, in Biblical times, was the practice of sacrifice to Moloch among the Phoenicians. Of course, burnt sacrifice was the common practice of Greeks, and Jews and almost everyone. A burnt offering was well accepted by the various gods. Even JHVH specifically demanded burnt offerings. I've always believed that the murder of heretics (like Joan of Arc and Bishops Cranmer, Latimer and Ridley) by the Catholics was a form of sacrifice, rather than an attempt to punish them. Similarly, the burning of huge numbers of heretics and witches was a sacrifice generally believed acceptable to god. Of course, mere burning could not destroy the soul. So the condemned were "saved" to suffer eternal flames of hell for the gratification of the faithful.
Sadly enough, the Salem (it means "peace" -- i.e. Shalom, Salaam) puritans hanged the witches (and pressed one man to death with stones). I am sure they had the best intentions and thought they were acting like good Christians. Some of our finest politicians are descended from these puritans. Peace.
