Chris...

I looked again at Esau having married a daughter of Ishmael and have to admit that I have viewed that in the wrong light for quite some time.

I do agree with you that Esau was trying to please Isaac by marrying her and did not do it on purpose.

It is perhaps yet another example of the following principle:

Romans 8:8 So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.

Although, Esau was not trying to please Our Father in heaven yet I think it serves as an excellent example of what "our efforts" do at best.

Abraham had already heard from God before Esau was born that the Bond Woman was to be cast out and yet Esau fails to understand the difference and married into that very family while he yet had two Hittite wives.

I want to thank-you for pointing that out to me and also challenging me to look at both Jacob and Esau again.

I do not see what Jacob did as being "as evil" considering that Esau had "sworn an oath" and was breaking it.

Do you fault Jacob for having two wives?

I don't. It was not "his" sin.

The sleeping with the maids thing was Jacob giving into the lack of faith on Rachel's part at the first.( Sin's of Abraham visiting a second Generation )

He later seemed to not care ( hardened heart )

In the end it was Esau who left and moved away and Jacob who inherited that land peacefully.

Proverbs 16:7 When a man's ways please the LORD, he maketh even his enemies to be at peace with him.
