Hi Del, it's already 2000 in Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul, and Sydney, not to mention a lot of other smaller places. Just logged onto CNN.com and South China Morning Post Internet edition (Hong Kong English language paper) and it looks like so far, so good. The big news of the day is that Yeltsin has resigned, and Putin is going to take his place, and given Putin's track record that doesn't seem to bode well (former KGB, head of Security Council, authorized current Chechenya invasion), but we shall see. And the Indian hostages have been freed in India, so that's good news for them.

As to your question about bicycle societies, I've lived in places where you could walk to the grocery store and the dry cleaner and the liquor store and the bank, mixed commercial and residential areas. I thought they were good places to live. Fairfax County is adamantly opposed to that kind of development, and I don't understand the mentality.
