I heard today that something like $70 billion in cash has been stockpiled in bank vaults for y2k. Guy on the radio said that money would be going right back into bonds in January. Should bring the yields back down on the long bond I assume. If so this run up to 6.5% makes more sense.

That depends on whether this was a reference to the liquidity the Fed injected in currency for possible Y2K runs, or if it is money market funds parked until Y2K is over. If it is the former, I would expect the Fed to drain that liquidity pretty quick.
