GV, On the Y2K front, the only things that I have noted thus far are that about 5% credit card machines in Great Britain
malfunctioned and Charlotten NC's 911 system shut down. Right now Charlotte is processing 911 calls manually.

Curious, it's not Y2K yet in those places. Probably something else. I guess Y2K will get blamed for whatever. No glitches in Australia, I heard on the news. Oh, that news reported that someone "asked Jeeves" what time it is in Tonga, right on the dateline. Answer came back 1/1/19100.

GV, re: "I note that a lot of the people that are in CA or FL now grew up with the winter. Perhaps everyone just needs a little change."

I think you are right. There are a disproportianate number of folks here in Florida from place like Buffalo, NY, and from Canada.

Interesting that the thread has been discussing weather and place, in a kind of retrospective manner, rather than the usual financial issues that revolve around Intel. Though most of us would probably dismiss the idea, maybe there is more of a subconscious significance to this event than we think. Trying to bring a virtual community closer to a traditional community?

Happy New Year, New Decade, New Century, and New Millenium to All!

GVTucker, RE: Perhaps everyone just needs a little change.

Even though I love the sunshine and pleasant weather in the South, I miss the New England winters, having grown up in Wakefield, Mass.

Coldest I remember was on a trip to Vermont. -70F wind chill and we were riding the ski lifts where they handed you a frozen army blanket to block the wind on the way up. Crazy, but we were there to ski and that's what we did. Just a tad icy!

But that was during a time I parked in the 50 cent lot down by the old stadium and hiked up the hill to my job in downtown Cleveland. When I arrived at the door to Ernst & Ernst, I had to wait for others to join me so we could join forces to open the door against the winds blowing off Lake Erie. We did this every day, all winter. And now, it's nothing but fond memories <gg>.

I'm afraid I want it all...much like with my investments.

Weatherwise, I'd like the winters of the South with a few good snowstorms (where I pick the dates) and a few days of sledding and ice skating. I'd like spring to be like April in Chapel Hill and fall to be like October in New England. Summers can be like my days in Midlothian, Virgina, not oppressively hot but warm enough to enjoy the lake.

Now, I'm not asking for anything more than a risk-free investment that matches (or beats!) the returns of the last decade.... and can be counted on for another 50-60 years or so...

Happy New Year Eve Everyone. Happy New Year Coming.
And thanks for the good years of SI and the 1900s.

BTW Don't you feel a little bit like Alice?
I can't wait to see what's on the other side of the rabbit hole. And I'm very glad you all will be there when I find out!

GV,

And unlike most of the posters on this thread, I much prefer having cold winters with lots of snow.

Count me in. I love the snow and lots of it. If you've never taken a walk in the hills on a snowy day, you've missed out on one of life's most beautiful experiences. The snow muffles all the sound and you become aware of everything around you. If you love dogs, the sight of them romping in the snow is the sight of pure joy. I grew up in snow and my lifelong fantasy has always been to get snowbound in a cabin for about a week.
