There is a story about the death of Rabbi Akiva, who was flayed alive at age 85, that Moses looking down from Heaven asked God why He allowed evil and God answered, "Silence! This is how it is in the highest thought."

A modern author wrote, "The silence is often so emphatic. And we have prayed so much already. Are we talking to ourselves in an empty universe?"

Silence can be a very difficult thing to understand.
