I disagree about Hull and Orr. Before Gretzky, hockey had entered a slow decline. It had ceased getting broadcast time, and even ESPN wouldn't show games. After Gretzky's position was clear, people flocked to games, it got a foothold in the Sun Belt, and ESPN began to cover it.

As for Jordan, even the Wizard of Westwood agreed that as good as he is, he wouldn't be AS good if it weren't for what the refs let him get away with. He could dominate a game...but so did the other players you mentioned. Don't forget that Bird and Magic had each other to contend with. Jordan appeared at a time when he had no similar match up (and not necessarily because he was THAT good), and mediocrity became the norm in the NBA.
