OT. Mobiles hit by computer crash Friday, 31 December, 1999, 22:54 GMT Vodafone mobile phone services have been disrupted after a major computer fault in the west of Scotland. The company says the problem, which is causing disruption in Scotland and Northern Ireland, is not connected to the millennium bug. The technical malfunction left scores of the company's workers unable to help customers who wanted to access their account details. A worker said: "The computers failed at about 5pm this evening. "It is purely a technical problem and has nothing to do with the onset of the millennium. Account details "The technical problem would not affect customers' network capabilities. It simply means we cannot help customers wishing to query account details." Vodafone spokeswoman Michelle Burgess also warned that the network were likely to become overloaded for the two hours either side of midnight. She said: "We are expecting problems to occur between the 11pm and 1am period. "The sheer volume of calls and text messages are likely to cause problems for the network.
