Hi Christine! I wonder if I haven't been scratched from your "OK to post to list." A few comments on your comments--

First, although America can be fairly singled out for an unenviable level of personal violence, I hardly think Christianity is a qualifier. To begin with, virtually all 1st world countries are Christian. There is of course, Israel (similar religious foundations) and Japan (which while emulating the west greatly, remains the polar opposite of a multi-cultural society and where "shame" is a clearly understood part of the picture).

You will have a hard time showing that the crusades or inquisition were not more power-based than religion-based (although religion was the dressing). Much of the horror in Spain, for instance, was aimed at individual and groups who threatened the prevailing or emerging order.

I am not trying to excuse anything the church did because people in the church did a great many stupid and horrible things in the middle ages. So did other rulers.

I feel safe in saying that Stalin and Meo and Pol Pot and Idi Amin did not kill in the name of Christ or any other God.

Ease up, would you. Thank you anyway for not going off on the Christians are superstitious idiots road.

Gotta run out to the Bamboo - we can talk more if you ever want.

The happiest of new years to you and yours,

Mike

You are correct. This country has an inexplicably high violent crime rate which needs to be addressed seriously. These crimes are in stark contrast to both the laws and the religious principles upon which those laws are based.

Happy New Year to you.
