FOCUS-Minor Y2K problem hits eight electric utilities
(Rewrites to add details)

WASHINGTON, Jan 1 (Reuters) - Eight power plants in the U.S. East and Midwest experienced a date-related computer glitch Friday after passing midnight Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), but service was not disrupted and the problem was fixed quickly, the U.S.'s Y2K czar said on Saturday.

''This was a problem with the synchronization with the Global Positioning System (GPS),'' John Koskinen, the nation's top aide on the so-called Y2K bug, said at a briefing early Saturday.

The clocks at the electric utilities, which are synchronized to the GPS for precision timing, were all reset and there was not any interruption of service or operations, he said.

Nearly one-third of all U.S. electric utilities have their operations timed to GMT, which passed midnight at 7 p.m. EST.(cont)

Don't forget May 5, 2000....a bunch of planets will be in a rare lineup up on one side of the Sun, putting unusual stresses on our little Earth. Geez, the catastrophe calendar is pretty full for 2000!
Happy New Year to all, even those in bunkers
John

While Y2k is likely to remain a non-event, this problem is very real.
