Chinese New Year Begins February 16th, 2000

Chinese Announce the Year of the 'Carpet Bagger'

BEJING - Authorities have announced that the next Chinese New Year, which begins on Feburary 16th, 2000, is being changed from the 'Year of the Hare' to the 'Year of the Carpet Bagger'.

One Chinese official told BNN, "We wanted to have a year that honored the Clinton family. That is what initially inspired us to name next year after the Hare. But after further review, we thought it would be more prudent to openly show our support of Mrs. Clinton's run for the Senate. That led us to change the name to the 'Year of the Carpet Bagger'."

Some Chinese traditionalists have complained about the name change. They claim that the year must be named for an animal. Officials in Bejing are defending the name change. Said one official, "It all depends on how you define the word 'animal'. We believe that a Carpet Bagger is a very cunning and clever 'political animal' that deserves to be recognized just like the fox or a weasel."

Bejing's announcement of the name change has Republicans on Capital Hill infuriated. Said one Congressman, "This may not be a monetary contribution to Hillary's Senatorial Campaign, but I'm sure that it is illegal."
