OT Funny, I never think of Chile having glaciers...

Chile is the longest country in the world, measured north to south. It stretches 4.300 km and is never more than 180 km wide. (2.600 and 110 miles)

Up in the north there are deserts, some of the driest in the world, altiplano with wildlife of flamencos in salt lakes. And if it rains, the desert turns into a sea of flowers. (I saw it two years ago and it is a truly astonishing view. Later on I will put some of my 2000 pictures of Chile on the net.)

In the south there are thousands of islands, hundreds of lakes, tens of glaciers.

Both ends of the country are nearly inhabited, offering fine travel options.

In the middle part you will find cities and villages, with friendly people. Restaurants offer a rich array of local wine, fruits and seafood.

Over the whole range of the country you'll find vulcanoes, on the edge of the Andes mountain range. Some with a perfect snow covered cone, like this one: chile-outdoors.cl

Chile, however is mostly unknown to the outside world. Most of the online travel sites do not even cover it. A good exception is lonelyplanet.com
But even that is not complete and outdated. It mentions still the 'recent violent history', which in reality is more than a decade ago. I'm a Dutch national living more than 5 years in Chile and it truly is one of the most friendly place to live. Even the metropolitan area of Santiago with 5 million people, has the atmosphere of a village.

The opportunity is that Chile will profit a lot from the internet. We will work to get on the e-map. Internet in Chile is now one of the fastest growing areas.

Chile is the other side of the world, measured in miles.
Chile is just a one day travel, measured in travel time.
Chile is just a click away, measured in internet time.

Internet and travel will be become the major growth areas of the economy. Being far away is not a problem in the virtual economy. Your next competitor might as well come from Chile.
Both growth areas are strongly linked, the internet will allow to distribute better travel information regarding Chile to the rest of the world. Now travellers depend mainly on their travel agent to offer a destination, and the agent has little information of Chile.

Longer term, the internet should allow people to work less and travel more.

One day you all come to Chile

(next destination for the Longs??)
