"In response to the growing popularity of downloading music from the Internet, we have announced plans to introduce a flash-memory-based digital music device.

This device - to be called Rush! - will provide music lovers with everything they need to acquire, play, manage and transport their personal digital music collections. As announced in August, Rush! will be bundled with Real Networks' RealJukebox(TM) software.

The product is capable of downloading MP3 content and will be SDMI compliant. We expect to commence the first shipments in the US during the first quarter of 2000.

Solid state audio devices clearly present the next big breakthrough, and Philips has a product roadmap in place to bring this technology to an affordable level and integrate it smoothly with both PC and traditional audio environments. This week, it was announced that we also develop applications making use of Memory Stick."

I find it hard to believe that Philips is just going to settle for a device that only plays MP3. Surely, they want a more robust product.

"Multiple music codecs can be built into the design, and the player can be adapted to use different forms of memory including SD Flash, MultiMedia Card, IBM's microdrive or Sony's Memory Stick(TM)."

I wonder who these licenses are that EDIG is going to announce before the next show.
