Read all..How IDC is leading in 3G technology..!

The third generation of mobile communications which will arrive in the early years of the 21st Century holds the promise of a whole new world of communications. It will create a paradigm shift in the way in which people conduct their personal and business lives, more significant than anything since the invention of the telephone. Third generation will change the concept of communications from being about place-to-place to being about person-to-person, regardless of location.

Voice, for so long the dominant paradigm in communications, will continue to play an important role but, as third generation becomes more and more established, new services based on high speed data, video and advanced messaging will begin to assume greater importance. The two most significant technological developments of the late 20th Century -- mobile communications and the Internet—will converge in third generation. Third generation will also see a shift of focus away from technology and toward applications and services. The enormous potential of the third generation technology with its very high speed data throughput capability will enable the development of applications not possible with today's narrowband technologies and limited data speeds. Video-conferencing, web browsing, holiday postcards by wireless, e-commerce, on-line shopping and banking—the list of potential applications for third generation will be limited only by the imagination.

Innovative Technology
InterDigital is positioned to play a leading role in the evolution to third generation mobile technology. Long known as an innovative developer of advanced technology for wireless applications, InterDigital's expertise in creating advanced solutions based on the CDMA and TDMA multiple access technologies gives the company a unique advantage in third generation development.

InterDigital's expertise in all aspects of the TDMA technology reaches back to the company's origins and the development of products such as the UltraPhone®. Subsequently, InterDigital conceptualized a new type of air interface based on Broadband Code Division Multiple Access (B-CDMA™) which represented a quantum leap forward in wireless communications.

B-CDMA technology enables wireline quality voice transmission, high speed Internet access and data transmission, and multimedia applications in an efficient wireless communications.

System on a Chip
From the original concept, InterDigital integrated, proved, iterated and finally reduced the B-CDMA solution to a single chip. InterDigital's work with the B-CDMA technology resulted in an extensive portfolio of key patents which are directly applicable to the WCDMA/IMT-2000 third generation air interface. Drawing on the expertise of its highly qualified engineers, InterDigital is developing IP (Intellectual Property) blocks covering all aspects of the third generation air interface, not just the physical layer, where signals are processed, but also layer 2, where information is packaged, and layer 3, which is concerned with routing the information.

The complexities of the third generation technology will mean that many potential players in the market, particularly those in the second and third tier, will not have the resources or skills to develop third generation solutions. They will be turning to specialized engineering firms like InterDigital for expertise. InterDigital has the skills to develop advanced third generation solutions and deliver them to the customer as a single package—a complete system on a chip. Not only will this enable terminal manufacturers to substantially reduce the critical time to market, it will also open up opportunities for new players such as manufacturers of personal digital assistants and other handheld devices.

These opportunities will include the option of product differentiation through the development of client specific software.

InterDigital has developed a new methodology for transferring its technology to customers. Using leading edge technology, InterDigital is able to provide its customers with software tools which shorten the development time for new products, again reducing the time to market. In addition, the InterDigital technology transfer methodology virtually eliminates errors in design modifications and substantially reduces the cost of the total design cycle, as companies no longer need to invest in their own research and development.

Two of the three modes of operation defined in the CDMA component of IMT-2000 are Time Division Duplex (TDD) and Frequency Division Duplex (FDD). With its established expertise in FDD, derived from the legacy of its B-CDMA development work, InterDigital is well positioned to play a leading role in this arena. The company has initiated the development of an FDD system on a chip with an aggressive development schedule designed to meet the market entry requirements of third generation vendors. InterDigital is also active in developing TDD solutions with the ultimate aim of creating a dual mode FDD/TDD system on a chip which will greatly enhance the capabilities of third generation terminals.

At the Forefront
InterDigital's third generation market strategy is to develop innovative and advanced technology solutions for third generation products. The development of third generation IP building blocks and the subsequent growth in InterDigital's patent portfolio will create considerable revenue generation opportunities in the commercialization of third generation. Through its FDD/TDD initiative, the system on a chip solution and its leading edge technology transfer methodology, InterDigital intends to be at the forefront in the realization of the third generation vision.

Take a look at the quality of analysis, and then take a shower to cool off. This is hype, pure and simple.
