Eric,

As I've stated before, I work in development on one of Q-Charts' competitors. I have three different systems providing streaming real-time charts and quotes (four if you count Live Charts). I think you have stated the problem very clearly when you said:

"I strongly suspect that the problem is that the protocol between the qcharts program on the computer and the server is set up so that it only functions properly within a finite (and too small) response time. If the net connection is a bit slow or the servers are a bit overloaded the whole system collapses."

While I am not familiar with the actual source code on the Q-Charts program, nor would I be able to read it if I were, there are legal liability issues concerning this very point with the other two quote packages I use (and I would assume with Q-Charts as well). If data flow slows below a certain "predefined threshold", server connection is terminated. This is because late real time data is not real time data.

Now assume that your "pipe" is marginal, and further assume that you fall into the "high risk" user category as defined by my earlier post. Would that not explain the performance issues you are experiencing? Also, the frozen chart thing (which I have seen a couple of times) seems to be related to a combination of a dataflow glitch and then the subsequent caching of the "blank" data in my own system. When I change the time frame on that chart, the chart has worked again, and then when I change it back, the original setting is working fine, telling me that the data is, in fact, there, but that for some reason I was having a hard time processing it.

Finally, have you had the opportunity yet to download the NeoTrace software and check the "pipe" as well as the data flow speed at Q-Charts' servers? This certainly will go a long way in the ultimate resolving of this problem. Hopefully, as this frontier continues to improve, and as QC continues to add servers, these types of data problems will be a distant memory by the next New Years. Good luck solving the problems. If I can help at all, let me know. I have no financial interest in defending QC, but feel like they are receiving a "bad rap" on some fronts. On the other hand, I would like to manage their customer support division for about a month. I think some big changes would happen there. In fact, I know some would. I am just glad that they have a few dedicated technical types like Gibbons was and Paul is.
