Regarding "QCOM to the Moon" and Ken Toudouze's vision (or a lack thereof), this is very typical of the type of writing we have seen over the years. Flawed assumptions followed by an intuitive statement to support those assumptions.

He did make a powerful comment but lacked the vision to see the real answer and that comment was:

"What about the service providers and their entire deployed GSM infrastructure? We do not believe they will abandon it without trying to maximize their investment".

Now this is an interesting point. With all the talk about 3G and W_CDMA GMS service providers would have to abandon their original GSM investment. I believe this is exactly what NOK, ERCY, MOT and others would want for the service providers - Spend billions on a totally new infrastructure (W-CDMA) But is that realistic?

Now with a cdma overlay (over GSM) and HDR an incremental approach would appear to be more much more in line with Ken's point about service providers wanting to maximize their GSM investment.

So for those GSM providers they can:

1. Develop short term services using EDGE and GPRS
2. Wait for w-cdma and spend billions for a new network
3. Adopt a cdma overlay - move to HDR

We can already see GSM operators attempting to roll out edge and gprs. This move is a very short term approach with little long term impact on the wireless internet.

While all the non-cdma service providers and vendors talk and position - qcom, cdma vendors and cdma service providers continue to implement thus controlling the long term competitive environment of wireless internet. FWIT
thanks
Web.

Jenne: Thanks for posting various articles here. When you do so, would you please be sure to also provide a link to the actual article. If you cannot do that, then please give us the name of the publication and the date, so we can know the source of the information and/or analysis. This would be very helpful and is how other people's views (besides those of the poster herself) are generally presented on this and other SI boards. Thank you.
