Now THAT would have been in the earlier days...when cigarettes were macho and roughhewn- the Marlboro man, Lucky Strike, Camel...or you rolled your own and struck the match on your unshaven cheek.

THen they got more classy, with names that sound like they came over on the Mayflower-- Tarryton, Winston, Salem, Benson and Hedges. Cigarettes that Amy Vanderbilt would have approved.

And then of course, women, demanding an equal chance at lung cancer, emerged as a market and we got the lovely Virginia Slims and Eve, with its pretty flowered packaging, and the Light brands, which would appeal to a female as it sounds dietary.

Indeed, the development of tobacco product names is an interesting social commentary.
