It was sort of disconcerting, I was in the process of writing to tell you how much I admired the post, when the edit popped up. I still admire the post, but the edit put a flaw in the hard, glossy finish. For the record, here it is when I started to admire it:

Calendars are conventions. Ours is not based on the actual incarnate "manger thing", but on some black robes' abstract and official Best Guess of when that might have happened. Black robes dead a thousand years now. (Or so.) And while research might adjust or correct our understanding of the timing of the nominal calendar-anchoring event, once the calendar receives its imprimatur it rapidly takes on a tremendous inertia. I, being famously inert, couldn't give a toss about New Revelations re agricultural accommodations for putative divine illegitimi. My my my Millennium will arrive "by the numbers" on 01/01/01.
