My broker doesn't pick tops and bottoms of any stock. If you can, then you should quit your day job. What the value of my relationship with my broker is to pick up on trends, prevent me from doing dumb things, keep me invested in the right securities at the right time, etc. I wish, as does he, that I waited with cash in hand to buy that AOL at 76 pre-split, however, my end result was very positive since let's look at what actually happened: as the AOL stock dropped and my spirits dropped, he encouraged me to stay with AOL, rather than bailing out. He gave me compelling reasons why AOL was coming back. So, from buying 3,000 shares at 125, I sold them at 175. You should try having a relationship type account with a broker who is a great one with no commission charges. Your skepticism of brokers would be eliminated if you had such a relationship since the broker wins only if I make money, not on any commissions for trade recommendations.
