Last I checked, the total number of fixed site phones to be manufactured in 2000 was low(40K total I think). I don't see how 18K have already been made--that seems a stretch when only 40K total handsets are supposedly out there. Schwartz detailed the fixed phone numbers recently--I haven't been taking notes lately so you would have to get his quotes from RS or someone else here. Anyway, you have to counter these high use fixed phones against the minimal use mobile phones that many are acquiring "just in case." I doubt Jon Koplik is going to crank out 160 minutes per month and he is not alone. The fixed GEO terminals in Indonesia have been doing 800 minutes/month. That is a good guide to G* use in similar countries. You can check the use of GVT phones for their numbers in Latin America. The vertical markets by nature should be high use, and we better see big numbers right off the bat since vertical markets are the focus markets to start. Bottom line--if G* is successful in the areas they are focusing on, the minutes of use should start out way high. We'll see soon enough. I agree with Maurice though that the ease of buying a phone for anyone who calls and asks is a bit troubling. Why aren't they scarce? Why isn't every oil rigger, forest ranger, and miner clamoring for them and making them impossible to get? As always, just throwing out skepticism to keep the chat flowing--with the arrival of mo mo folks like Greg and Doc Savage, who says buy it 'cause it's going up and damn the fundamentals, I just can't resist a few comments!
