mindmeld, The trouble is that even with monterrey, cerent and pirelli, NT will still own the optical space (at least when compared to CSCO). NT is claiming a goal of 10 billion this year in optical revenues. Brian

What else does Nortel have that Cisco might want?

The answer is the broadest product portfolio of any telecommunications equipment company.

"Never happen. Cisco would not want to buy a poorly run shop that they'd have to divest 90% of, just to get at its optics technology."

Mindmeld, let's put things in perspective.....first of all, NT's controlling interest is owned by BCE so I highly doubt that NT would be available unless CISCO paid ridiculous premium -- which is not possible due to NT's run-up.

Secondly, I would give much higher odds of NT or Lucent acquiring Cisco in the next few years as soon as Cisco starts to falter and their share price start plumetting.

Likelyhood is that neither scenario will happen for LONG time unless one falters really badly in the short-term.
