on "just on paper" millionaires

All investments have some element of risk. The idea of a paper millionaire has more to do with not recognizing that risk. Having shares of Qualcom which add up to $1,000,000 at year's closing does not mean that that you can buy $1,000,000 of something else. There are taxes and commissions for one thing. But most important is the idea of risk. Who can doubt that any of the leading stocks could correct by 20%. If there is any condisention toward "paper millionaires" it is to those who don't understand that the present value of any investment is governed by several factors, including a risk discount and an inflation discount. There is also opportunity, which is kind of a negative discount. A million dollars cash, today, could buy Qcom, but Qcom could not be sold for a million. However a year from now a million dollars cash is less than that due to inflation while a million dollar Qcom portfolio could be worth much more.
TP (Better paper profits than no profits at all)

Edit - this is a general comment, I'm not trying to imply you or other readers do not take risk into account. - TP

Jim, Happy New Year,
And a well thought out, literate, excellent response.I hear the same thing....I dont tell non stock market people anymore in fact...when I say
"Oh my goodness my Qcom stock went up 159 today...I cant believe it! I made so much money."..those who are afraid (of the stock market, of any risks?) say "But sell it so you really make the money".
This is the greatest bull market in history. The true tech leaders will give us mind swirling returns and then settle down to a calm excellent return...I have had my share of terrible investments and thought "I cant buy stocks anymore" but in the long run I know that I am truly fortunate to be able to participate in the growth of one or two of American's (and the world's) best run companies which are and will be consistently successful.
If the government doesnt steal their profits and harrass them as is being done to MSFT.

I know what you mean. I am sure QCOM stock certificates are made from paper. To me, it's not just paper. Recently I upgraded my E320 to S500 without even selling that QCOM paper. I paid for the car with margin loan (again that paper.) Hey, who said that's just paper? That's my brand new y2k S500!
