Tom, Wind River and Echelon don't compete in any way. If anything, Echelon could use Wind River's OS underneath some sort of central control server.

Right. Take a look at the following job posting on Echelon's website:

Software Engineer

Location: Palo Alto, CA, USA

Job Description: Be a part of a small team to recreate the Neuron C programming model in Java. Implement solutions that allow others to implement real time control devices using Java that work with existing, installed LonWorks nodes. The initial platform will be an embedded RISC controller. Tasks include developing system support class files, development system class files, and Java Beans.

Requirements: Applicants should have BSEE/BSCS or MSCS or equivalent. Experience in building high performance multi-threaded Java applications for deployment on multiple platforms. Understanding of and experience with Java performance optimization techniques, CORBA, RMI, IP networking, XML, JNI, control systems, and VxWorks is desirable.
