First let me say that I am a "user" and not a computer geek, so I don't truly understand all of the technical stuff. Having made the disclaimer, the way it was explained to me (if I remember) was that if you had a three inch pipe flowing water it would flow a maximum of X gallons per minute. Now, suppose that you have three three inch pipes. It would now flow 3X gallons per minute. That is "effectively" the same as if you pressurized the single pipe to increase the flow to 3X. The important thing in data flow (as I was told) is how many pieces of data per second can be shoved through your connection(s). Since the electrons move at the speed of light, the actual speed is not the important issue, but rather the flow of data. If you flow three times the data as a single connection, you are "effectively" the same as if you had a single connection at three times the speed. The added benefit being the redundancy and the various routes the data can take simultaneously. I'm sorry I can't do a better job of explaining the technical aspect of it, but from a practical standpoint, the thing screams and even when ISP's do their typical "kick you off" thing, the connection restores itself and in the mean time, there is no perceivable loss of speed.
